Opaque ruby. Displays expansive aromas of ripe cherry and cassis, cured tobacco, coconut and roasted coffee, with a spicy element building in the glass. Broad and appealingly sweet, offering palate-coating red and dark berry preserve flavors and hints of spice cake, mocha and succulent herbs. Finishes very long, smooth and smoky, with repeating spiciness and velvety tannins that come in late. (59% new oak, French and American)

Also from the estate vineyard in Paso Robles, the 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon spent 17 months in close to 60% new French and American oak. Cassis, blackberries, crushed rocks, violets, and cedary spice notes all emerge from this beauty, which is pure and medium-bodied, with good acidity and a fresh, focused style. Nicely structured, it reminds me of a Cabernet Sauvignon from Ridge with its American oak as well as its minerality, and it should age for over a decade. Rating: 90+
